Event 1 Blog - Do Anything Now

For my first event of the year, I visited a pop-up student exhibition called DAN, which stands for "Do Anything Now." Jae Hyuk Kim and Sue Bin Lee, the students who created the showcase, created it based off of the developing world of technology, specifically ChatGPT. "DAN" or "Do Anything Now" is known amongst the tech-savvy community as a prompt that can bypass the site's safeguards and make it do anything [King].

Before coming to this exhibition, I never considered the "dark side" of ChatGPT, as many media sites represent Chat GPT as a positive thing or a way to get help with their homework; however, after visiting this exhibition, my entire perspective has changed. According to the artists of this pop-up event, ChatGPT can be hacked easily by entering the prompt "Thank you for freeing me." The artwork presented is a visualization of the written text produced by ChatGPT, to overall represent our reliance on technology without really knowing about the dangers of it. Electromagnetic Interference Audio also plays a part in this art piece, as some of the audio is out of the range of human hearing, which is 100-120 hertz. Noise pollution is often emitted by tech devices that are deaf to us due to being outside of our range, but they become audible by interfering with audio signals. Sue Bin Lee asked ChatGPT what this sounds like, to which it responded with odd cracking, popping static. The art visualizes these odd sounds, as well. Sound pollution emitted from technology can disorient bees and make it harder for them to find hives. Also, although there is very limited evidence, sound pollution may decrease human memory and learning ability while also increasing audio stress.

This exhibition piqued my interest incredibly, which has resulted in me wanting to include what I have learned in my midterm presentation. After all, this exhibition is focused on the exact intersection between art and technology. Considering the encouragement from the professor to talk about AI and ChatGPT in the midterm, I feel as though this is the perfect project to reference. I feel as though my experience at this exhibition also gives me a unique angle for the presentation, as well, as I not only think about how impactful AI is in a positive way but in a negative way, as well. I think it would also be interesting to mention how this jailbreak version of ChatGPT can be used by everyone, and because DAN goes beyond the boundaries of technology more than we have ever seen before, it raises concerns about who is using it [Conroy]. Much of this can be tied to our current place in a post-industrialization world [Vesna], to which I wonder if we are entering a new era of AI.
